Set high above the town at the top of Well`s Brae is the Spa and Visitor Centre of St Ronan`s Wells. This is a historic Spa built in 1828. It houses displays telling the story of the site and its links with Sir Walter Scott and James Hogg, the legend of St Ronan and the history of Innerleithen.
The origins of the unique Cleikum ceremonies held in July each year are also explained.
This print depicts one of these ceremonies. And, although I have attended at least 4 times, much of what happens, and why, remains a mystery to me.
What is important is the sense of an almost sacred ritual played out beautifully.
The kilted Standard Bearer watched by the full panoply of officials and participants, seems to walk on clouds of tree shadow ( I like tree shadow !) to fulfil his role at the ceremony at St Ronan`s Wells.
