Sitting at the top corner of Victoria Park in Peebles, in the shade of tall evergreen trees, is Peebles Tennis Club.
Old fashioned and charming. Green painted wooden clapboard, with a veranda looking out onto the red clay courts. Peebles is a town of interesting old tennis clubs. There`s another one at the Hydro.
Clearly for decades this has been a community within a community.
In this image I wanted to use tree shadow to help denote the lines of the court (white on black) and also to create an ambience of gentle rustling wind, and to give an impression (on this long summer afternoon) that the players were somehow moving / floating on clouds.
A scene from the Jacques Tati film “M Hulot`s Holiday” played through my mind as I worked on this picture. Hulot at the beach side tennis court beating all opposition with his extraordinary and original serve.
